Motor Vehicle Point System

     The Motor Vehicle Administration ("MVA") assesses points against your driving record for convictions of violations of the vehicle law.  A conviction occurs and points are assessed if you're found guilty by the court or you pay a ticket without appearing in court.

     In the event of convictions for multiple tickets issued at one time (for example, speeding and reckless driving), all convictions show on your driving record, but you only get points for the conviction that carries the largest point penalty.  Points for multiple convictions are not added together.

     Points are "current" on your driving record for two years from the date of the offense, but remain permanently on your record thereafter.

In most cases, if it has been three years since points were last assessed against your driving record, your record can be made completely clear.  Please contact our office to find out more.

     If you accumulate 3 points in 2 years, the MVA sends a warning letter; accumulate 5 points (8 points for professional drivers) and you're called in for a conference; 8 points subjects your license to suspension; 12 points subjects you to revocation.

   The following chart includes some, but not all offenses punished by the assessment of points:

Failing to stop for a school vehicle with alternately flashing lights 2
Reckless driving 4
Driving while not licensed 5
Failure to report an accident in which you are involved 5
Driving on a learner's permit unaccompanied 5
Participating in a race or speed contest on a highway 5
Driving while impaired by alcohol and/or drugs, or combination 8
Driving under the influence of alcohol 12
Turning off lights of a vehicle to avoid identification 8
Failing to stop after accident resulting in damage to vehicle or property 8
